Design Philosophy
Ground Stories is a Pittsburgh-based, landscape design studio dedicated to the creation of thoughtful, sustainable, and site-sensitive landscapes. I believe in using narrative as a catalyst for design, and I strive to understand each client’s particular story, and each site’s history and ecological conditions.
Ground Stories follows Simon Schama in its belief that “landscape is the work of the mind.” Through a participatory design process, I search for the stories embedded in the existing landscape as well as those brought to the site by individuals, families, and communities. The goal of Ground Stories is to create personal, inclusive landscapes that engage natural systems and spark discussion.
Ground Stories works at all scales, from full-scale landscapes to small patios, vegetable gardens, and rain gardens. If you simply need advice on plantings, or want someone to generate some ideas for your space, Ground Stories will do that too.
